Just In: Texas Rangers Confirms Major Update Regarding Top Star Josh Smith

Josh Smith had a breakout season in 2024, but 2025 will be the year he proves it wasn’t just a one-time success.

At 27, Smith stepped up in a big way last season, filling in for the injured Josh Jung and posting career-best numbers in several categories: home runs (13), RBIs (62), stolen bases (11), doubles (30), hits (135), runs (67), and a 3.2 WAR.

This offseason, Texas confirmed that Smith will take on more of a “super utility” role. During spring training, he showcased his versatility by playing multiple positions, giving fans a glimpse of how he’ll be utilized this year.

That flexibility was immediately put to the test on Opening Day when he started at shortstop in place of Corey Seager, who was the designated hitter. In the seventh inning, with the game tied 2-2, Smith made a stellar defensive play—ranging up the middle, securing a tricky grounder from Triston Casas, and making a spinning throw to first for the out.

And the best part? Shortstop isn’t even his primary position.

Smith’s defensive range extends far beyond shortstop. He’s capable of playing third base, second base, the outfield, and even took reps at first base during spring training.

With the rise of elite utility players, MLB introduced the Utility Gold Glove Award in 2022, recognizing one player from each league for their defensive contributions across multiple positions.

This season presents Smith’s best chance to win that award. Assuming the Rangers’ core defenders stay healthy, Smith will likely get four to five starts per week, rotating between different spots on the field.

While his arm strength and outs above average are slightly below elite levels, his defensive profile is similar to Jung’s—not known for consistency but capable of making highlight-reel plays. Given his skill set and impact, I predict Smith will take home the 2025 American League Utility Gold Glove Award, adding it to his Utility Silver Slugger from last season.
