St. Louis Cardinals catcher has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a bone bruise in his left knee.
With top star sidelined, Pedro Pagés is expected to take on most of the catching duties. The team also called up catcher Yohel Pozo from Triple-A Memphis, and he started in the Cardinals’ game against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
He sustained the injury during the first game of a doubleheader in Boston. He’s expected to miss approximately four weeks.
In his first season as the Cardinals’ primary catcher, Herrera had gotten off to a strong start, hitting .381 with four home runs and 11 RBIs over seven games.
He was unable to put weight on his left leg after running the bases and had to be helped off the field. Fortunately, tests came back negative.
“That was really encouraging,” said Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol ahead of the series opener against Pittsburgh. “The way his knee gave out, I feared it could be an ACL tear.”
