The Buffalo Bills and star running back James Cook are at a standstill in contract negotiations. After back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and leading the league in rushing touchdowns last year, Cook is seeking a deal worth over $15 million per year, which aligns with the market value for top players at his position. However, Buffalo isn’t willing to offer such a deal, especially for a running back.
With Cook listing his Orchard Park home for sale, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport discussed the situation on the Pat McAfee show, noting how significant it is when players make such moves, even if it doesn’t directly affect negotiations. Rapoport acknowledged that while the Bills want Cook to be part of their future, his demand for $15 million may not have been well received by the organization.
The Bills have spent much of the offseason extending other key players, including edge rusher Greg Rousseau, linebacker Terrel Bernard, and wide receiver Khalil Shakir. The latest deal, a four-year, $76 million contract for cornerback Christian Benford, marked the conclusion of their negotiating period for now.
General manager Brandon Beane stated, “Once we got Benford done, I don’t see us doing any deals anytime soon. We’re gonna focus on the draft and getting our cap in order,” while also expressing that the team still wants Cook to remain a Buffalo Bill beyond this season. However, the contract dispute continues to intensify and could become more contentious as the offseason progresses.
