BREAKING: Orioles officially confirm the departure of 25-year-old pitcher as he joins rivals

The New York Yankees have acquired right-handed pitcher from the Baltimore Orioles, bringing the 25-year-old back to the team where he originally began his professional career. He first joined the Yankees as an international free agent in 2016 but has spent the past few years moving between multiple organizations.

He initially developed as a promising pitching prospect within the Yankees’ minor league system before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in January 2021 as part of the deal that sent right-hander Jameson Taillon to New York. While with the Pirates, Contreras showed flashes of his potential, particularly in 2022 when he posted a 3.79 ERA over 21 appearances (18 starts).

The 2024 season proved to be a turbulent one for Roansy Contreras. He started the year with Pittsburgh, recording a 4.41 ERA across 12 relief outings before being designated for assignment in May. The Los Angeles Angels then acquired him for cash considerations, and he went on to pitch in 37 games (including three starts), finishing the season with a 4.33 ERA over 52 innings.

During the offseason, Contreras was claimed off waivers multiple times, passing through the Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, and Baltimore Orioles before ultimately landing back with the Yankees on January 23, 2025. His return marks a full-circle moment in his career.

Over 90 major league appearances (33 starts), Contreras has compiled a 10-16 record with a 4.72 ERA, three saves, and 201 strikeouts in 234.2 innings. His ability to contribute as both a starter and reliever provides the Yankees with valuable depth heading into the 2025 season.

However, since Contreras is out of minor league options, he will need to earn a spot on the Yankees’ Opening Day roster during spring training or risk being placed on waivers once again. His performance in camp will play a crucial role in determining his future with the team.
