Philadelphia sports fans have built a distinct reputation over the years. The media has often portrayed them as passionate but also rowdy, outspoken, and at times, controversial. While this perception may be debated, there’s no denying a history of infamous incidents. In 1968, frustrated Eagles fans, upset with their team’s 2-11 record, pelted Santa Claus with snowballs during halftime.
In 1999, Phillies fans took their anger out on J.D. Drew, who chose to sign with the Cardinals, by throwing batteries at him on the field. Most recently, on Wednesday night at The Palestra, Philadelphia fans made their feelings about Jayson Tatum clear with a not-so-friendly three-word chant.
Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics are in Philadelphia for a matchup against the 76ers on Thursday night, and ahead of the game, Tatum made a stop at The Palestra to watch the Philadelphia Catholic League Semifinals.

The historic venue, which hosts Penn Quakers events and various tournaments, has a capacity of 8,700. While it’s unclear if the arena was completely sold out on Wednesday night, the unmistakable chant of “F*** the Celtics” suggests a nearly full crowd. Philadelphia has no shortage of sports rivals, with Boston being a major one. Judging by Tatum’s smile in the video, he was well aware of the reception—and chances are, this won’t be the last time he experiences it in Philadelphia.
