At the NHL trade deadline, the Colorado Avalanche made several key acquisitions to strengthen their roster for a deep playoff run.
They acquired defenseman Ryan Lindgren and forward Jimmy Vesey from the New York Rangers. Lindgren, known for his toughness, immediately became the team leader in blocked shots. General Manager Chris MacFarland praised his “warrior mentality” and big-game experience. Vesey, a versatile veteran with 617 regular-season games, was excited to join the team, knowing a trade was likely as his contract approached expiration. MacFarland highlighted his ability to play up and down the lineup and contribute on special teams.
During their 7-3 win over the San Jose Sharks, the Avalanche added center Brock Nelson from the New York Islanders. Nelson, who has scored 127 goals since 2021-22, brings proven scoring ability and playoff experience. MacFarland called him a “significant upgrade” at center, noting his two-way play and versatility.

The Avs weren’t done. On deadline day, they acquired center Charlie Coyle from the Boston Bruins and reunited with longtime Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson, who was with the team from 2011-2023 and won the Stanley Cup in 2022. Coyle, a playoff-tested forward, provides lineup flexibility and a strong physical presence. Johnson’s return was met with excitement from his former teammates, as he already understands the team’s structure and winning culture.
These moves signal the Avalanche’s all-in approach to contending for another Stanley Cup. “We know we have a contender,” defenseman Devon Toews said. “Now it’s on us to show up and play.”
