BREAKING: Dolphins Rare Trade Lands ‘Top Experienced’ 4-Time Championship Winner and Offensive Star

It’s uncommon for NFL trades to involve only players, but Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department suggested a rare move the Miami Dolphins could make to acquire versatile offensive lineman Joe Thuney.

The proposal involves Miami sending veteran offensive tackle Terron Armstead to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Thuney.

“This is a swap of two highly skilled linemen who could be intriguing fits for their new teams,” Bleacher Report’s staff wrote.

“For the Dolphins, this would provide an opportunity to strengthen the interior of their offensive line, an area that has been a challenge since Mike McDaniel took over. Thuney is among the league’s best at his position, but the Chiefs also need to pay Trey Smith this offseason. Meanwhile, their biggest concern is at left tackle, where Thuney was forced to play during the playoffs.

“Financially, both teams would take on a similar cap hit. While Thuney has been the more durable and consistent player, he doesn’t play the same premium position as Armstead. On the other hand, Armstead has struggled with injuries but plays a position that’s harder to replace. This trade could strengthen both offensive lines.”

Regardless of the Chiefs’ outcome against the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 9, Thuney has already secured four Super Bowl rings—two with Kansas City and two with the New England Patriots. He has also been named to the Pro Bowl in each of the past three seasons.

Armstead, despite dealing with injuries in 2024, started 15 games. He previously earned Pro Bowl selections in 2022 and 2023.

Why the Dolphins Should Target Joe Thuney

Miami has gained a reputation as a “soft” team due to its struggles in the running game, particularly on inside runs. The Dolphins ranked 21st in rushing yards and 28th in yards per carry during the 2024 season.

Their ground attack worsened as the season progressed. After averaging 133.9 rushing yards per game over the first eight games, Miami’s production dropped to just 80.4 yards per contest over the final nine.

To address this issue, analysts believe the Dolphins should prioritize upgrades on the interior offensive line—an area where Thuney would be a major improvement.

A three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro (2023 and 2024), Thuney has been a high-level performer. While Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades him higher in pass protection than run blocking, he consistently receives strong marks in both areas.

Among guards who played at least 80% of their team’s offensive snaps in 2024, PFF ranked Thuney as the fourth-best in the league.

Would the Chiefs Trade Thuney?

Despite his injury issues in 2024, Armstead remains a talented player. The Chiefs might consider trading Thuney for him and then restructuring Armstead’s contract to help retain Trey Smith.

This move could make sense since Smith is only 25, while Thuney will be 32 next season.

However, as Bleacher Report noted, Thuney is one of the league’s top guards. Letting go of a player with his Super Bowl experience—especially with one year left on his contract—would be a tough decision for Kansas City.

Additionally, Thuney showcased his versatility by stepping in at left tackle during the Chiefs’ playoff run and continuing to perform at an elite level.

While Thuney would be a major asset for Miami, his adaptability and championship experience might make him too valuable for the Chiefs to part with.
