Liam Cooper has described Leeds United’s relegation from the Premier League as the “worst day” of his life.
The centre-back was a member of the Whites team that was relegated to the Championship in May after losing to Tottenham on the final day.
Cooper is captaining the side this season under Daniel Farke, with the West Yorkshire club currently placed 12th in the Championship.
According to BBC Sport, when asked, “What does it mean to represent Leeds?” Cooper responded, “Our song encapsulates it; ‘Ups and downs.'”
Tough moment
“We’ve been through everything together. Getting promoted was most likely the best year of my life, as well as the happiest day of my life. Then, getting relegated last season was the saddest day of my life, because that’s what sport does to you.”
It was a tough day for the Whites when they were relegated from the Premier League, but it was inevitable given their failures during the season.
Cooper was part of a club that struggled in various areas, with many changes in the dugout as Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce all served as managers.
A poor defensive showing and a lack of goals going forward saw the West Yorkshire club finish in 19th place on 31 points, five shy of 17th-placed Everton.
Under Sean Dyche, the Toffees stayed up on the penultimate day of the season with a win over Bournemouth, but Tottenham won all three points against Leeds to send them down.
Many of the senior Whites players have since left the club, but Cooper remains at Elland Road, and he is now among those attempting to return Leeds to the Premier League at the first attempt.
