New York’s manager discusses Luis Gil’s recent troubles.
New York Yankees rookie Luis Gil lost his third straight start on Tuesday, giving four runs and two hits in four-plus innings while walking three and hitting two batters.
Gil is 0-3 with a 14.90 ERA in his last three starts, after going 9-1 with a 2.03 ERA in his first 14 starts.
According to the YES Network, Yankees manager Aaron Boone summarized what he believes Gil’s issue is.
Boone stated, “I don’t believe this is a fatigue issue. I think it’s a little out of sorts, and I’m having a difficult time correcting on the fly.”
Gil got off to a good start for the Yankees on Tuesday before things went south. He retired nine straight before Reds star Elly De La Cruz opened the fourth inning with a shot into the right-field corner for his sixth triple of the season. He scored after Jeimer Candelario grounded out on the next pitch.
De La Cruz also homered in the fifth inning.
LHP Carlos Rodón takes the mound for the Yankees on Wednesday. Rodón has been dealing with his own issues recently. He is 0-3 with a 13.17 ERA after a seven-start winning run.
Yankees’ Aaron Judge continues torrid pace
In the Yankees’ loss to the Reds, Judge homered in the seventh off Sam Moll for his third hit. He now leads the major leagues in batting average (.321), home runs (32) and RBI (83).
Judge eclipsed Yankees great Babe Ruth for the most home runs hit by a Yankee before July 1 this weekend with his 31st bomb of the season.
Judge is on pace for a career best in RBIs, and his 32 home runs after 87 games are one more than he had in 2022, when he set the American League record for home runs in a season. He also had more runs batted in before July than he did throughout the whole 2023 season.
His output has been, simply put, astonishing.
And the Yankees need him to continue performing. Juan Soto has been in and out of the lineup due to injury. Anthony Rizzo has also been out injured. Even Jasson Dominguez, the top Yankees farm prospect, has been suffering with medical issues.
The club’s performance has suffered in recent weeks as a result of the numerous injuries. As a result of the current slump, the Yankees are now only a half-game behind first place in the American League East. New York is trailing the Baltimore Orioles, but it still leads the division in wins.
