Newcastle finally release statement on Sandro Tonali betting investigation

Newcastle United has issued a statement about an investigation into Sandro Tonali for football betting.

The midfielder is being investigated by Italian authorities for bets he put on matches while playing for AC Milan, including games in which he played. He revealed to prosecutors that he had bet on Rossoneri games, although he denies any involvement in those games.

Tonali, according to 90min, could be banned from football for up to three years under FIFA regulations, but he is expected to receive a more lenient sentence after admitting guilt and cooperating with investigators and prosecutors – Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli was given a seven-month suspension for similar offenses.

Newcastle confirmed authorities’ inquiry into Tonali’s betting conduct in a statement made on Wednesday.

“Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal betting activity,” the statement went on to say.

“Sandro is fully cooperating with all relevant authorities and is fully engaged in the investigation.”

“He and his family will continue to receive full support from the club.”

“Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

On Tuesday, the head of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina, expressed her sorrow and empathy for Tonali for Fagioli.

“I feel for the two players as a human being; they are like children to me.” We must not condemn these young men. Gambling addiction is a social scourge, not a football issue. “I assure you that whoever asks for assistance will receive it,” she stated.

“Whoever made a mistake will be punished and assisted in a project of healing and recovery.” We need to get these people back on track. We must ensure that these children may return. We are not going to forsake these lads. Ever.”

Giuseppe Riso, Tonali’s agent, added that the Italy international has a gambling problem.

“We are overjoyed by Gravina’s remarks. “The federation is behind Sandro,” Riso stated. “He is engaged in his most important game – the battle against gambling addiction.” He’s stunned and heartbroken.”
