Yankees interested in adding former All-Star after a devastating injury to key man

The New York Yankees had intended to have Anthony Rizzo as their full-time first baseman this season, but now that the 34-year-old has sustained a forearm injury, the Bronx Bombers must make alternative preparations. Rizzo’s injury is likely to keep him out for around two months, and while 25-year-old prospect Ben Rice can fill in as much as feasible, the Yankees also want to have a backup plan in place.

While losing a good player to injury is never fun, the Yankees still have plenty of time to try to fill the vacancy at first base. The MLB trade deadline does not occur until July 30. There are numerous options accessible. However, others believe that the Yankees should try another approach to improving the roster.

According to FanSided’s Robert Murray, the Yankees are among numerous teams interested in signing former All-Star first baseman Garrett Cooper. Cooper, 33, recently became a free agent after being dismissed by the Boston Red Sox after a rocky season in which he hit just.171 in 24 games.

Cooper did, however, get off to a much better start to his season when he was with the Cubs, hitting.270 in his first 12 games. Despite a good battling line, the Cubs traded Cooper to Boston to give Michael Busch and Mike Tauchman more playing time.

Cooper can play right field in addition to first base. Regardless, the 6-foot-5 slugger might add another potentially dangerous bat to the Yankees’ lineup at a critical moment.
