From September 1 to 9, 2023, it appeared that the New York Yankees had their next great outfielder.
Unfortunately, it is about all they have seen.
MLB Pipeline ranks Jasson Domínguez as the Yankees’ top prospect, but he has struggled with injuries throughout his career. Domínguez tore his UCL after only 10 days in the MLB last year. He underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the remainder of the season.
Domínguez resumed his rehab assignment in mid-May and demonstrated his batting prowess. Following his rehab assignment, he was optioned to Triple-A due to a glut of outfielders on the Yankees’ MLB roster.
Dominguez is still at Triple-A, and the injury bug has bitten him again.
Domínguez had discomfort near his left oblique during a check swing on Saturday. On Sunday, he was placed on the minor league injury list for seven days. Unfortunately, he will be out much longer than a week.
On Thursday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone informed reporters that Domínguez will miss around eight weeks due to a left oblique strain. This will keep him out until late August.
Domínguez, who joined as an international free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2019, has been a consistent performer. Dominguez (nicknamed “The Martian”) hit.258/.303/.677 in eight MLB games last year, with four home runs, seven RBI, and an OPS of.980.
Dominguez had an OPS of 1.044 in nine Triple-A games this year, batting.389/.405/.639. In 23 minor league games this season, he had six home runs and a 1.014 OPS.
Domínguez will return to the disabled list, where he has spent most of the past year. The 21-year-old has seemingly untapped potential, particularly as a slugger, but he’s struggled to stay healthy while climbing through the minor league ranks.
The Yankees believe Domínguez can return to Triple-A by late August, with a potential September call-up. For the time being, however, they will have to continue to wait for their rising star. Fortunately, their outfield of Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Alex Verdugo has remained healthy, allowing them this luxury.
