Nottingham Forest suffer fresh injury setback for key man ahead of PL return

Nottingham Forest have been handed an injury worry over full-back Gonzalo Montiel ahead of the weekend’s Premier League meeting with Luton Town after the full-back was pulled off after only half an hour during Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Peru.

The 26-year-old is one of several players who have been on international service in the last two weeks, having joined the Argentina squad. He was an unused substitute in Friday’s 1-0 triumph over Paraguay.

However, the Forest player was given an opportunity to shine on Tuesday evening as he was put to the starting lineup for the World Cup qualifier against Peru.

Lionel Messi scored both of Argentina’s goals in a 2-0 win, but Montiel lasted for just over half an hour.

According to Argentine outlet La Pagina Millionaria, the Forest player began making signals to the bench at the 30-minute mark, signaling that he had sustained an injury. He was replaced a few minutes later, with discomfort clear as he walked off the field.

The news will alarm Steve Cooper and his players, who return to action this weekend against newly promoted Luton Town at the City Ground. Montiel has made four appearances for the club since joining in the summer, coming on at halftime against Crystal Palace to replace the injured Serge Aurier.

There is also concern about Ola Aina’s availability, which means Forest might be missing up to three right-backs against Luton, leaving Neco Williams as the only fit alternative. The Welshman has not played since a 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Burnley in August, when he played at left-back.

Williams is presently serving with Wales on international duty. On Sunday, the 22-year-old played the entire 90-minute match against Croatia in the Euros qualifiers.
