Another Top Kentucky Transfer Lands Commitment with Another Team

Kentucky transfer and top prospect in the 2023 class, has committed to with another team.

According to Richard Davenport, Kentucky freshman DJ Wagner, the former No. 1 overall recruit in the 2023 recruiting class, will join John Calipari at Arkansas for his sophomore season.

The 6-foot-3 combo guard was a McDonald’s All-American and a five-star prospect, and he is now ranked No. 38 in the transfer portal.

Wagner averaged 9.9 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists as a freshman for the Wildcats, shooting 40.5% from the field and 29.2% from three.

The choice to follow Calipari comes as no surprise, as he is now the third player from Kentucky’s roster to do so, joining three high school players who switched from Kentucky to Arkansas.

Wagner is the son of former Memphis great Dajuan Wagner, who played for Calipari with the Tigers, and the relationship is still bearing dividends.

Wagner is Arkansas’ ninth addition this offseason, after John Calipari inherited a severely decimated roster.

The Razorbacks now have one of the best recruiting classes in the country, both in high school and in the portal, with Wagner completing the backcourt with Top 5 transfer Johnell Davis.

Wagner is a strong, hard-nosed guard who fights on every possession while on the court.

He can play both on and off the ball, but his greatest worth lies in the intangibles he brings to the floor as a fearless competitor.

His rookie year did not measure up to the high expectations placed on him, but with an improved jumper this season, he could have a breakout sophomore season in Fayetteville.

Arkansas will continue to be active in the gateway as they seek to add more depth, but the fundamental components appear to be intact.

Calipari is performing exactly as expected, continuing his rampage on the recruiting trail while overhauling a program and roster barely over a month into his tenure.
