This offseason, Georgia football has bolstered its roster with several key additions from the transfer portal, including two projected starting wide receivers and some solid reinforcements in the secondary.
As February approaches, transfer portal activity is expected to slow down until after spring practices. However, Georgia had been targeting one final transfer: Ohio State defensive lineman.
He spent the past two seasons with the Buckeyes, recording 14 tackles and one sack. While those numbers aren’t eye-popping, his potential is evident, having been a four-star recruit out of high school. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart hosted Kanu for a visit to Athens on Tuesday, with expectations that a commitment decision would follow shortly.
Kanu is heading to Texas
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Hero Kanu officially announced his commitment to Texas on Wednesday morning.
While it’s always disappointing to lose a recruiting battle, especially to an SEC opponent Georgia will face directly in the coming years, this particular loss isn’t a major setback. For one, Kanu has yet to establish himself at the collegiate level. That’s not to say he lacks talent or potential, but it’s unlikely he’ll make an immediate, significant impact in his first season with the Longhorns.
Additionally, Georgia still has ample time to address any roster needs through the transfer portal if Kirby Smart and his staff feel it’s necessary. Although portal activity will likely slow down until after spring practices, Georgia is expected to be active again later this year.
Ultimately, while landing Kanu would’ve been a nice addition, his commitment elsewhere isn’t cause for concern. Georgia can pursue another defensive lineman transfer after spring, if needed. Even if they don’t, the Bulldogs have a proven track record of developing elite talent along the defensive front, and they likely already have several standout players ready to step up.
