Breaking: Virginia Tech land commitment for another talented star

A top exceptional point guard prospect, has given Virginia Tech and Megan Duffy a significant commitment.

The 5-foot-10 guard from Boone, North Carolina chose Virginia Tech over Kansas, Purdue, Michigan, Wake Forest, Princeton, Marquette, and Clemson.

“I chose Virginia Tech because when I visited, it felt right,” Sears told 247Sports. “I’ve always wanted to go somewhere that most people in my town don’t go, but where I can win and have a strong basketball fan base.

Although the staff is new, I am certain that the other coaches will be successful. I know it won’t be long before we’re back in the Final Four, which was extremely important to me.”

Sears said, “Many of the colleges I was considering were a flight away, such as Kansas, Purdue, and Michigan, but it all came down to distance and people. I didn’t want to be far away from my family, but I also wanted to be surrounded by lovely people. I’ve developed a wonderful rapport with Coach Duffy, and I know the rest of the staff will push me to be the best on and off the court.”

Megan Duffy was hired at Virginia Tech in April, and she has already made an impact this summer by landing Sears. Sears took note of Duffy’s success at Marquette, which advanced to the NCAA tournament last season.

“Coach Duffy recruited me throughout the whole process,” she stated. “She was at Marquette.” And now that she’s accepted the Virginia Tech position, I know she’s a winner. She’s demonstrated that throughout her time at Marquette, and I’m confident she’ll win here. That, together with the incredible resources and fan base, drove me to this conclusion. They have everything they need to win, and I’m confident she can get us back on track.

Coach Duffy persuaded Sears that he could be used on and off the field while also having the potential to be a valuable offensive player.

“They see me as a point guard, but also as a two,” Sears stated. “I’m really adaptable in that I can play one or both, which is essential to me. Throughout my career, I primarily played on the ball, but I also know how to play off the ball and shoot. They also deploy a lot of ball screens, which allows the guards to move downhill and play basketball without becoming robotic in the offense.”

Virginia Tech finished 25-8 last season and advanced to the NCAA tournament’s second round. Now that she’s a part of the program, Sears hopes to grow as a player and contribute to the team’s success.

“I know the coaches are going to push me to the best of my ability on and off the court,” she stated. “I’m going to work hard and strive to be the best player I can be, and that will convert into wins. I want to win the conference and make a run at the tournament.”
