Detroit Lions Facing New Massive Problem Prior To The 2024 NFL Season

Looking ahead to the 2024 NFL season, the Detroit Lions are predicted to be real NFC contenders. It’s been a long time since that was the clear expectation for this franchise. They have built the correct way and are finally a viable challenger.

After making it all the way to the NFC Championship Game last season, the Lions are trying to go one step farther and reach the Super Bowl. They surely have the roster talent to achieve this goal.

The Lions have been extremely busy this NFL offseason. They have extended contracts with three of its key players: Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Penei Sewell. They are now facing another question mark.

Do they wait to extend Aidan Hutchinson, or should the Detroit Lions do so now?

Matt Verdame of Sports Illustrated addressed the question in a recent story. It’s a tough topic because the Lions have already invested heavily this offseason. However, if they wish to extend Hutchinson’s contract for an extended period of time, the cost may rise even further.

“After handing out $332 million guaranteed this offseason to Penei Sewell, Jared Goff, and Amon-Ra St. Brown, Lions ownership may be feeling a little tapped. Hutchinson, meanwhile, is available for an extension following the 2017 season. It’s always best to extend sooner rather than later because the cap will only rise, but will the Ford family wait another year after this winter’s shopping spree?”

Granted, they’re asking the issue before the 2024 season, but they’ll have to answer it next offseason. However, they should begin to consider this circumstance.

Hutchinson has emerged as the driving force behind the Detroit Lions’ revival. The defense has become one of the most feared in the NFL, because to his frightening defensive play and ability to get to the quarterback.

Hutchinson finished the 2023 season with the Lions with 51 total tackles, 11.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception, and seven passes defended.

Very few defensive ends in the NFL can match that kind of output. Hutchinson is a true generational talent for the Detroit Lions. They should not take any chances in ensuring his long-term commitment.

It appears that the Lions will negotiate a long-term contract extension with Hutchinson next offseason. However, they must begin preparing for this immediately.
