Jamie Vinson, a previous Vanderbilt recruit, is back on the market and considering Kentucky as a landing point.
Any hopes of finalizing the Kentucky high school basketball class have been dashed, as Mark Pope and his staff are pursuing a previous SEC commitment.
Jamie Vinson had committed to Vanderbilt but reopened his recruitment after head coach Jerry Stackhouse was fired following the season. Now he’s visiting Kentucky in the hopes of joining Pope’s strong debut roster.
Vinson is allegedly on campus at Kentucky today, one day after the Wildcats welcomed their top transfer target, Chaz Lanier.
Vinson, a 6-foot-11, 215-pound center from Oak Hill (Va.), has received offers from South Carolina, Cal, Rutgers, and other schools. So far, he has visited South Carolina and Rutgers.
“A high-upside frontcourt prospect who can immediately contribute as a shot alterer,” 247Sports national recruiting analyst Brandon Jenkins wrote when Vinson committed to Vandy. “Offensively, he shows floor spacing potential and can score with a soft touch around the basket.”
While Vinson would most likely be filling the 13th and final scholarship — and behind a full front court — playing against extremely experienced players like Andrew Carr and Amari Williams, as well as a former McDonald’s All-American in Brandon Garrison, every day in practice would be extremely beneficial to Vinson’s development.
Vinson is also the type of player that Mark Pope is searching for to complete his team.
“The 13th scholarship is a floating piece,” Pope explained last week. “We view it as a place for a young athlete. It could be a position for a senior player who plans to redshirt. It could be a site for a project. It could be ideal for a high-risk guy. “That is how we see it.”
Vinson would join a high school class that includes four-star guards Travis Perry, Trent Noah, and Collin Chandler.
