ESPN REPORT: Former Duke basketball star will return to Durham

The Blue Devils will welcome back one of their former players next season.

The third time seems to be the charm for the Duke basketball team.

After Christian Reeves (Clemson) and TJ Power (Virginia) decided to stay in the ACC after hitting the transfer portal this offseason, Jaden Schutt chose to do the same when he announced his commitment to Virginia Tech.

Schutt made the announcement via social media Saturday night.

Schutt, unlike Reeves and Power, will return to Durham next season.

Duke plans to host the Hokies in the winter, but the date has yet to be set.

The 6-foot-5 guard had a rough two seasons at Durham, appearing in only 14 games as a freshman and then missing the Blue Devils’ season-opening blowout win. Jon Scheyer later confirmed that he would redshirt the upcoming season.

He then had a knee injury during practice that necessitated surgery.

It’s unknown whether he’ll be ready for the start of the season, but he still has three years of eligibility left.

Jaden Schutt arrived at Duke as a highly regarded shooter, but he averaged only 2.1 points per game on 35.0 percent shooting (7-of-20) during his rookie season.

 

 

The Yorkville, Illinois native chose Virginia Tech over Dayton, Butler, and DePaul. He was ranked No. 231 in the transfer portal by 247Sports.

Before deciding on Duke, Michigan State was considered the favorite to recruit him out of high school.

Jaylen Blakes is now the lone uncommitted Duke player who has entered the transfer portal this spring, as Jeremy Roach (Baylor), Mark Mitchell (Missouri), and Sean Stewart (Ohio State) found new homes, including ACC transfers.

To fill those roster positions, the Blue Devils recruited three transfers: Maliq Brown (Syracuse), Mason Gillis (Purdue), and Sion James (Tulane).
