Breaking: Lions Complete The Signing Of Another Top Experienced Star

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the Detroit Lions and quarterbackΒ  had agreed to a four-year deal worth millions of dollars, according to a source.

The deal worth $212 million includes a $170 million guarantee and will keep the star with the organization until the 2028 season. The Lions acquired Goff and three draft picks from the Rams in a 2021 trade.

The 2016 No. 1 pick’s contract extension will make him the highest-paid player in franchise history. After the new contract, Goff’s average yearly compensation of $53 million will make him the NFL’s second-highest-paid quarterback, after only Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Goff, 29, has been successful in three seasons with the Lions after being acquired in a trade that sent quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. He helped the Lions win two playoff games in one season for the first time since capturing the NFL championship in 1957.

He led the Lions to a 9-8 record in 2022, as well as 12 wins and a playoff trip last season. The Lions won their first two playoffs games since 1991 and advanced to the NFC championship game.

Quarterbacks Matthew Stafford & Jared Goff Are Enjoying Greener Grass

In a radio interview last week, Lions general manager Brad Holmes stated that Goff had “earned an extension” and was “a high priority” for the organization following the signing of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell to long-term contracts earlier this spring.

GM Holmes stated before,

“When he came to us, I always believed. So what he accomplished this year, or even the year before, does not surprise us. I just know how he is wired. I know his talent, his leadership, his mental and physical tenacity, and what he stands for, and I believe his colleagues and teammates do as well. So, I’m just delighted with what he’s done and could not be more proud of what he’s accomplished.”
