Breaking: Kentucky lands commitment of another top experienced star

The Kentucky Wildcats have added another quarterback to their roster, as Gavin Winsatt transferred. The former Rutgers quarterback is from Kentucky, having played high school football in Owensboro.

Last season for the Scarlet Knights, Wimsatt passed for 1,735 yards and nine touchdowns. He earned a QBR of 55.1, ranking 79th in college football. Last season, he rushed for 497 yards and 11 touchdowns, demonstrating his ability to use his legs.

It’ll be intriguing to see how Wimsatt fits into the depth chart alongside Brock Vandagriff, Beau Allen, and freshman Cutter Boley. Depth is never a bad thing, and Wimsatt is a player who helps this football team get better and deeper.

According to Gabe Brooks of 247Sports, Wimsatt comes out of high school with good size and frame for the quarterback position, as well as an athletic, slightly high-cut build. A large length will allow for additional mass in a college weight-training regimen. Experienced in football, basketball, and baseball. I played 58 basketball games during my freshman and sophomore years, averaging 11 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Bouncy athlete who explodes on the hardwood. Functional athleticism is demonstrated on the gridiron as a play-extender outside the pocket and a runner, whether intended or scrambling. Not a burner, but a long-strider who builds speed on the open field with good long speed relative to position.

When throwing on the run, he generates a lot of torque and subsequent arm strength, particularly when throwing across his body while rolling left. Has good pocket awareness and an instinctual play style that allows him to make big plays in unexpected scenarios. Places the ball well on downfield throws from outside the numbers. Arm strength doesn’t appear to be an issue. Size and athleticism enable good over-the-middle velocity when needed. Through the sophomore and junior seasons, productivity was strong but not great.
