Former EPL manager reveals discussions with Sunderland for new manager role

Former Brighton manager Gus Poyet claims he has spoken with Sunderland’s owners about their next manager search.

Poyet coached the Amex Stadium for four seasons from 2009 to 2013, as well as Sunderland for two seasons after leaving Brighton.

Sunderland have fired two managers this season, the first being Tony Mowbray, who was quickly replaced by Michael Beale. Michael Dodds is in interim control, but the Black Cats want a permanent manager to deal with a talented but erratic group that is 13th in the Championship.

Poyet is currently in command of the Greece national team, however his future remains uncertain after apparently declining the opportunity to manage the Republic of Ireland.

“I am in touch with the Sunderland owners because I know them well,” Poyet told @FootballLeagueW. “It’s a solid club with much of promise.

“They outperformed last season, making it to the playoffs. Expectations grew as the season progressed, and with a young squad, more time is required.

“With all the changes, it’s difficult to advance since the squad requires consistency. Sunderland is currently experiencing a period of calm. They must have a clear picture of where they want to go and then pursue that path. The good young players require a head coach to assist them so that they can progress to the next season.”
