The Blue Devils saw another highly regarded recruit enter the transfer portal.
The Duke basketball team lost another guard on Monday when Jaden Schutt announced his departure from the program.
Schutt had a successful high school career and was listed as a 4-star prospect and Top-75 player in the 2022 recruiting class, but things did not go as planned in Durham.
The 6-foot-5 guard appeared in just 14 games during his freshman season before redshirting as a sophomore. He had left knee surgery throughout the season, but that is not why he is not playing this year.
“Forever grateful for my time in Durham,” Schutt posted on social media. “The experience has been like no other and I have developed wonderful relationships with coaches, teammates, and the community that I hope last a lifetime.”
Jaden Schutt’s absence from Duke’s 38-point victory over Dartmouth on opening night raised questions about him.
“He faces a long trip ahead of him. “I love Jaden, and I’m going to keep [the reason he didn’t play] private for the time being,” Jon Scheyer stated following the game.
Just a day later, when Duke faced Arizona, Scheyer reaffirmed his decision to redshirt, saying, “Me and him have had some conversations, and we are going to continue to do the best thing for him.”
“I appreciate Coach Scheyer for giving me an opportunity to be a part of his first ever recruiting class,” he said.
This is Schutt’s first transfer in his life. Prior to committing to Duke, he spent his whole high school career at Yorkville Christian High School in Illinois.
“Duke is a special place and I have nothing but good things to say about the place I have called home for the last two years.”
The Blue Devils have a lot of quality entering the team next season at Schutt’s position, and the junior’s playing time would be limited if he wanted to stay. Duke has already learned that Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster will return next season.
Jaylen Blakes, Christian Reeves, and Mark Mitchell have also stated plans to transfer from Duke.
Kyle Filipowski and Jared McCain have declared for the 2024 NBA Draft, while the program awaits a decision from Jeremy Roach, who has one year left of eligibility.
