Miami Dolphins now bringing in a top center with another deal confirmed

The Miami Dolphins are bringing Jackson Powers-Johnson from Oregon, regarded as one of the top centers in the upcoming draft, for a pre-draft visit, according to insider sources. Powers-Johnson, recipient of the Rimington Trophy for the nation’s best center last year, earned prestigious honors including first-team Associated Press All-American and first-team All-Pac-12 Conference. Evaluators also see potential for him to excel as a guard in the NFL.

While some forecasts initially placed Powers-Johnson with Miami’s 21st overall pick, recent mock drafts, such as Mel Kiper Jr.’s from ESPN, project him falling to 47th. Despite this, his performance metrics remain strong, having played all his snaps at center last season with impressive pass-blocking statistics and a solid run-blocking grade from PFF.

Powers-Johnson’s versatility is evident from his previous seasons, where he played various positions along the offensive line. NFL.com’s scouting report highlights his strength and competitiveness but suggests areas for improvement in technique.

The Dolphins, who have already signed Aaron Brewer from Tennessee for center duties, are also considering Powers-Johnson’s potential as a guard. Brewer’s proficiency in run-blocking is noted, but his pass protection has been less consistent, with a notable number of sacks allowed.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins are monitoring the recovery of Connor Williams, who sustained a serious knee injury in a game last December. Williams’ future with the team remains uncertain as a free agent.

In other news, the Dolphins are looking to secure wide receiver Jaylen Waddle with a contract extension, especially after Philadelphia’s recent lucrative extension for DeVonta Smith, Waddle’s former teammate at Alabama. If a deal isn’t reached soon, the Dolphins are likely to exercise the fifth-year option on both Waddle and fellow 2021 first-round pick Jaelan Phillips by the May 2 deadline.

Additionally, safety Jevon Holland, a second-round pick, is also entering the final season of his rookie contract, with the Dolphins aiming to secure him long-term despite the absence of fifth-year options for second-rounders.
