Breaking: Duke land Three-Star 2025 QB commitment

Duke Football received a pledge from quarterback Dan Mahan this week, the first offensive commitment under Offensive Coordinator Jonathan Brewer.

Duke Football has received its first offensive commitment, as Three-Star 2025 Quarterback Dan Mahan pledged to the Blue Devils on Saturday morning. The 6’2″, 180-pound Burlington (NC) native had committed to Appalachian State since November, but was leaving his options open for other colleges. Justin Watts, one of Mahan’s Mountaineers recruiters, was appointed as Duke’s tight ends coach this offseason.

“(Coach Watts) was the main one that recruited me at App, came by the school a couple of times and when we were in Boone he was very cool to my family and I felt like we built a great relationship at App, so when I showed up at Duke, he was one of the first to come up to me and be excited that I was there.”

Mahan’s choice to decommit from App State was not an easy one, as he visited Durham three times in the previous week to ensure that everything he was looking for in a college was available there.

He also wanted to ensure that it had the same “home” sense before committing to spend the next 4-5 years of his life there.

“After my visit on Tuesday, I knew that was where I wanted to be; they were pushing me to make a decision, and once I sat down with Coach Diaz and Coach Brewer, it was a no-brainer! I (already) knew I wanted to be there, but I needed to obtain some answers and learn more about the school before making my decision.”

Just after his decommitment, Mahan was approached by nearby Wake Forest, who invited him to come up for a visit on Thursday, but he had already decided.

“The contacts I have with the coaches at Duke, as well as the Duke curriculum, make it difficult to pass up the opportunity to attend such a school. When they informed me I was their number one person and they wanted me at Duke, it was a no-brainer.”
