Kieran Maguire, football finance expert, has characterized Nottingham Forest’s financial position and pay cost as ‘out of control’.
Nottingham Forest, along with Everton and Leicester City, have been at the center of controversy and debate over the Premier League’s profit and sustainability criteria in recent weeks and months. The Reds received a points deduction last month for failing to follow the rules, and further information about their expenditure has been revealed.
According to recent statistics, Forest’s salary cost was almost £15 million greater than that of Premier League opponents Brighton, who have been in the Premier League for much longer and have established themselves as a top-tier club.
That concerns football financial specialist Kieran Maguire, who spoke with Football Insider about the situation.
Forest Wages ‘Out of Control’

Maguire examined Forest’s wage bill, specifically how much they spent on player salaries after being promoted to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. He concluded that the Tricky Trees have lost control of their spending and will not receive any pity.
“If you take a look at Forest’s wage bill, it’s about £15million more than that of Brighton, who are an established mid-tier Premier League club,” Maguire told the BBC. “It demonstrates that Forest paid very generous wages for a club in its inaugural season in the Premier League.”
“Looking at the clubs who have been promoted during the last decade, it is apparent that Nottingham Forest’s salary cost is out of control. As a result, I believe any pity for the club for their FFP infraction has been mitigated because the club just looked to disregard the regulations.”

“I think I punched something that was close to me,” Nuno said last month when he learned the news. “Of course, I was disappointed.” But that only lasted a few minutes since I knew we needed to recover quickly and work harder.
“There’s a sense of reality when you get to this point and understand you’re in a difficult situation. Our current predicament necessitates that everyone be completely focused on the task at hand. The past is past. The future tells us that we must win games. We need to work together and go for it. We don’t need anything else than our own will to remain in the Premier League.”
He added, “We now know. Who am I to decide what is fair and unfair? I need to adjust and deal with reality. We’ve had enough of talking; now it’s time to do action.
“I’m confident that our fans will support us, as they always do. They are more than just the 12th man. However, I believe that the sense of war – us vs the rest of the world – is counterproductive. Because we understand that this is not a war, but rather a football game that we must enjoy. Our followers’ support will be extremely valuable to us.”
