Breaking: Charlton Athletic receive huge boost for Wigan clash

Wigan Athletic will be missing their standout Premier League loan player when they face Charlton Athletic this week.
Charlton Athletic will attempt to maintain their impressive unbeaten record under Nathan Jones when Wigan Athletic visit The Valley on Tuesday night.

The Addicks have not lost a game since Jones’ first in command, a 2-0 defeat against Reading, and are now unbeaten in 11 league games. It’s been a stunning run of form under the former Southampton manager, with an apparently hopeless Charlton club currently lying 16th in League One and 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Charlton defeated Barnsley 2-1 last Saturday thanks to an Alfie May brace, and they have only a few days to prepare for Wigan Athletic’s visit. The hosts are encouraged by injury news from the Latics, particularly one hotshot on loan from Premier League club Liverpool.

Luke Chambers had played in every League Out encounter since joining on loan from the Reds in January, starting all but one. However, the versatile 19-year-old was not included in his team’s squad for last weekend’s goalless draw against Port Vale.

Chambers, a Liverpool youth academy graduate who was on Jurgen Klopp’s bench for numerous Premier League games in the first half of the season, has three Europa League appearances for Liverpool this season.
He had been impressing at Wigan but will miss the game against Charlton due to an injury sustained while playing for England’s under-20 team during the previous international break. Latics manager Maloney told Wigan Today:

“Luke has had a very hectic few weeks, and we’ve been trying to manage him as best we can. Unfortunately, I don’t think he’ll be back until the final game of the season, which is about the same timeframe as Josh Stones.”

Charlton won the last time the two teams met at the DW Stadium earlier this season. May scored twice in that October match, and Corey Blackett-Taylor also scored, putting the Addicks ahead 3-0 at halftime.

The hosts responded with two goals in the second half, the second coming in the 90th minute, but the Londoners held on for a 3-2 victory.
