Newcastle United defeated Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage on Saturday, with one big point of disagreement.
Newcastle United won a crucial match at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon thanks to a single Bruno Guimaraes goal, only minutes after the Magpies thought Fabian Schar had started the scoring. The Swiss international seized on a loose ball in the box and fired past Bernd Leno in front of a joyous away crowd, only for referee Sam Allison to rule the strike out following VAR intervention.
Allison was directed by the technology to examine to see if Dan Burn had fouled Calvin Bassey as the two jumped for a header shortly before Schar swept the ball home. After a lengthy look at the monitor, Allison signaled for a foul, and Fulham were rescued – but only temporarily.
Dermot Gallagher spoke on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch on the event, saying that he believes the officials made the correct call. “Good intervention.” Gallagher stated.
“At the time, I thought it was a foul on Bassey, and I still do. He has both arms behind him, pushes him, rises above him, and prevents him from heading the ball. “Foul for me.”
Although it did not cost Eddie Howe’s team on the day, Newcastle United’s head coach expressed disappointment with the decision to disallow Schar’s goal. He explained: “I assumed that was a goal. I thought Dan had gone in with force, but it is a fair challenge.

“I’m very astonished that VAR first signaled that there could be a foul, and then that the referee didn’t stick to his original decision. I believe referees should be more accountable when they go [to the monitor] and stick to their decisions, because for me, it was the right call, the original one was correct, and I’m unhappy that goal didn’t count.”
Sue Smith also spoke out about the event, stating she was still ‘torn’ on the phone over 48 hours later: “I was really torn [on Saturday] and I am still really torn.” Smith stated.
“I believe Dan Burn is producing strength with his arms to attempt to grab the header, but he is preventing Bassey from getting the ball, so I can see it from both sides. “I am torn on this one.”
