Miami Heat could be in danger of losing valuable coach to Charlotte Hornets

Chris Quinn, the Miami Heat’s assistant coach, is reportedly one of the early candidates to become the Charlotte Hornets’ new head coach once Steve Clifford steps down from his post at the end of the season to take up a role in the front office.
Quinn played for the Heat for the first three seasons of his NBA career before taking over as head coach. Over 168 regular-season games with the organization, he averaged 5.6 points and 2.2 assists while shooting 39.7 percent from three.

Quinn began his NBA coaching career with the Heat in 2014-15 as a player development coach. Over the years, he has become Erik Spoelstra’s right-hand guy as an assistant.

The 40-year-old has previously been considered for various open NBA coaching positions, including the Milwaukee Bucks job after the franchise decided to fire Mike Budenholzer following Milwaukee’s first-round loss to the Heat in the 2023 NBA Playoffs.

The Hornets have been one of the NBA’s weakest teams thus far in the 2023-24 regular season. At 18-57, they are the No. 13 seed in the Eastern league, trailing only the Washington Wizards and Detroit Pistons in the league standings.

Charlotte is also on a three-game losing run, with a 2-8 record in its last ten games.

On April 1, Clifford’s most recent game as Charlotte’s head coach ended in a 14-point loss against the Boston Celtics. Grant Williams’ performance against his previous team, with 23 points, seven rebounds, and two assists, was one of the Hornets’ few bright moments in the game.

If the Hornets do really grab Quinn from the Heat, it may be a significant blow for a Miami club looking to win a championship. Since 2013, when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh headed the squad, the franchise has yet to win a title.
