Tennai Watson, Charlton Athletic’s full-back, appeared to take a knock before being substituted against Stevenage on Monday.
Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones provided updates on the fitness of key players following his side’s 0-0 draw with Stevenage at The Valley on Easter Monday.
Macaulay Gillesphey and Karoy Anderson were not in the matchday squad, however Jones indicated that their omissions were due to fitness rather than long-term injuries.
He explained, “Gillesphey was tight, his hamstrings were tight, and we made a decision based on that. Anderson is a young child who has played six, seven, or eight games in a row before traveling to America to train in the heat and then returning. He seemed jaded the other day, so we’ll freshen him up, give him a few days off, and he’ll be back.”
The Welshman was also quizzed about striker Connor Wickham, who has only made one appearance for the club since signing last month, and full-back Tennai Watson, who limped out against Stevenage.
He stated, “Connor is closer than he was the other day, so we’re hoping to have all of these back in by the weekend so we can have more alternatives. That’s been frustrating because we’ve only seen him for 20 minutes.
“[Watson] is just tight. He provides us everything. We haven’t got much coverage there with Kayne Ramsay out and so on. It’s crucial that we rest now, and we have some cover there.”
Charlton’s unbeaten record under Jones continues with the draw, but it was a frustrating afternoon for home fans at The Valley, with neither team producing a quality performance. The Addicks manager was thrilled with the clean sheet and point, as his side moves closer to escaping relegation.
He stated, “Mixed feelings actually. There are other positives, including a clean sheet, another point, and another game unbeaten. They gave me everything and proved they were working.
Stevenage has held 19 clean sheets, with half of those resulting in 1-0 victories, demonstrating how difficult they are to beat and what they can do late in games when they play like the land of the giants; they are quite aggressive in that regard. I think we did well in terms of ball management, but we need to improve; we need to show a little more quality and bravery, but that will come.
