Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani has given a positive outlook on Rafael Leao’s future, claiming that the winger wants to continue at San Siro.
The 24-year-old’s future has sparked conjecture, with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea rumored to be among those prepared to match his €175 million (£150 million/$£189 million) release clause this summer. But in a wide-ranging interview, Furlani was optimistic about his chances of maintaining his flying winger.
“Rafa has a release clause of €175 million,” Furlani told Gazzetta dello Sport. “Apart from that, he wants to stay in Milan.” He’s extremely comfortable here; he should be begging us to leave, but he doesn’t want to. Long live Leao in Milan.
Leao has been a crucial player in Milan after joining from Lille in 2019, and it’s no wonder that some of Europe’s biggest spenders are looking to match his release clause. However, with four years remaining on his present deal, Furlani believes Leao is the guy to develop around as the Rossoneri try to recruit a centre-forward to replace the MLS-bound veteran Olivier Giroud.
Leao returns from international service when Milan travels to Florence to face Fiorentina on Saturday night in Serie A. They must put in serious effort if they are to catch runaway leaders and local rivals Inter at the summit.
