Breaking news: Newcastle United’s £43m Callum Wilson replacement

Newcastle United will want to add to its attacking options this summer, regardless of the future of current striker Callum Wilson, who is expected to leave St James’ Park.

Callum Wilson has been one of Newcastle’s most lethal goal scorers, but his stint has been marred by injuries, and it is now believed that the club may be looking to sell the 32-year-old while he still has some worth.

Regardless of whether that is true, there is no denying that the Magpies are short in forwards, with only Wilson and Alexander Isak to select from, both of whom have suffered injuries.

The trouble with strikers is that they don’t come cheap, but Newcastle may have just received some good news when one target’s asking price was discovered to be far cheaper than previously anticipated.

Gyokeres’ numbers this season are absolutely ridiculous

Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres has been on Newcastle’s radar for some time, with the Magpies missing out on acquiring the striker from Coventry last summer when the Sweden international chose to transfer to Portugal instead.

The 25-year-old is having a fantastic season with the Portuguese league leaders, having scored 36 goals in 39 games across all competitions and provided 14 assists.

These figures bear up the statements of his former Coventry manager, Mark Robins, who praised the striker’s ‘unbelievable skill’ last season.

Newcastle and Arsenal are now chasing three Sporting players

Gyokoeres has a release clause of £85 million at Sporting, but a recent report by Gazetta dello Sport suggests he might be available for just £43 million, which will definitely pique Newcastle’s interest as they attempt to add depth to their squad in the face of budgetary constraints.

Newcastle will be hopeful that Gyokeres’ fellow countryman, Alexander Isak, has spoken positively about the club while on international duty this week.

If the Magpies make a bid for Gyokeres this summer, they will face heavy competition, with Arsenal and other teams also interested. Both clubs are now looking at three Sporting players and might face off in the summer transfer market.
