It sounds like New York is trying to sign the former Cardinals hurler.
One former St. Louis Cardinals player is still waiting for his next opportunity, which is surprising.
The Cardinals traded veteran lefty Jordan Montgomery to the Texas Rangers before the 2023 trade deadline, and he helped lead the team to the World Series. Montgomery had an excellent season, finishing with an overall 3.20 ERA with a 166-to-48 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 188 2/3 innings pitched.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Montgomery is still available, and the New York Yankees are reportedly interested in him.
“The Yankees seemed to prefer (Blake Snell) since their analytics folks have the same issues with Montgomery as when they traded him away, namely that he doesn’t throw especially hard, and doesn’t miss enough bats,” Heyman went on to say. “Plus, accurate or not, word spread that Montgomery preferred to go elsewhere.
“Anyway, if Montgomery and the Yankees aren’t each other’s top picks, they may have few options today. According to sources, they have re-established communication. There is a divide, but they are at least communicating.”
Montgomery was acquired by the Cardinals in a 2022 trade with the Yankees and has impressed. The big lefty was the club’s best starter in 2023 before being dealt to Texas, and he will play a significant role for whichever team signs him.
He has been searching for a big deal, but with Opening Day approaching, it wouldn’t be shocking if Montgomery gets his next opportunity soon. If his price continues to drop, a reunion with St. Louis may make sense. It appears that there will be rivalry for his services.
