AC Milan star now a potential target for Real Madrid

Mike Maignan has emerged as a potential summer target for Real Madrid amidst ongoing uncertainties about Thibaut Courtois’ contribution to the team. Following confirmation of Courtois’ two-month absence due to a new injury, Fichajes reports Real Madrid’s evaluation of goalkeeper options for the upcoming season.

Courtois, who has been sidelined since August last year with a cruciate ligament injury, now faces another setback with a tear in his right knee’s internal meniscus, further casting doubt on his availability for the start of next season.

Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez is considering three alternatives to strengthen the goalkeeper position. One option is Diogo Costa, a 24-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper currently playing for Porto and a regular for the Portugal national team, who has long been on Real Madrid’s radar.

Another possibility is Maignan, the 28-year-old French goalkeeper currently with Milan, known as one of the world’s top goalkeepers. However, Maignan’s potential transfer could hinge on Milan’s financial situation, as they aim to generate revenue for new signings.

The third option involves retaining Andriy Lunin, who has filled in for Courtois this season and has surpassed Kepa in the pecking order. Despite Lunin’s impressive performances and being only 25 years old, there remain some doubts about his reliability in crucial moments.

Real Madrid will observe Lunin’s performances in the remaining Champions League matches before making a final decision, considering it wouldn’t require additional investment if he proves himself capable.

Additionally, Maignan didn’t participate in training with the French squad on Tuesday, with manager Didier Deschamps expressing slight concern, as they prepare for upcoming friendlies.
