Newcastle United expects to resolve a few injury issues over the international break.
The Magpies lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, with eight first-team players out due to injury or ineligibility. While Anthony Gordon recovered quickly from a knee injury that forced him to miss the match against Chelsea, Tino Livramento sustained an injury that prevented him from traveling to the Etihad Stadium.
Head coach Eddie Howe addressed Livramento’s injury after the game, saying: “It was a twist of the ankle against Chelsea. We knew the day after the game that he would not be able to make the journey to Manchester City.
“We don’t think it’s serious and we hope he’ll be back for the next match.”
Eddie Howe’s team will now travel to Dubai for warm-weather training over the international break before returning to Premier League action against West Ham United on March 30 at St James’ Park (12:30pm kickoff).
After missing out on an international call-up due to his injury, Livramento will travel with the Newcastle squad as they prepare for the remaining ten games of the season.
Newcastle will also hope to see Kieran Trippier and Harvey Barnes return from their individual ailments, while Joe White will be available for selection after being cup-tied for the Manchester City encounter.
1. Tino Livramento (ankle)
Livramento suffered a twisted ankle injury at Chelsea, ruling him out of the Manchester City trip. He is expected to return to action following the international break. Expected return: West Ham United (H) – 30/03
2. Harvey Barnes (hamstring)
Missed Chelsea with a minor hamstring issue. Is a major doubt for the Manchester City match. Expected return: West Ham United (H) – 30/03
3. Joe White (ineligible)
White is cup-tied for Newcastle’s trip to Manchester City. Expected return: West Ham United (H) – 30/03
4. Kieran Trippier (calf)
Trippier was forced off during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Wolves due to a calf issue. Following a scan result, Trippier has been ruled out for a few weeks. Expected return: West Ham United (H) – 30/03
5. Nick Pope (shoulder)
Nick Pope dislocated his shoulder against Manchester United in December and had surgery. Eddie Howe has stated that the goalkeeper will be out for several weeks and is not likely to return until ‘late April’. Expected return: Sheffield United (H) – 27/04
6. Callum Wilson (chest)
Wilson played 90 minutes for Nottingham Forest but finished the game with his arm in a makeshift sling. It has subsequently been reported that the striker sustained a pectoral injury in his chest and underwent surgery. Expected return: Burnley (A) – 04/05
7. Joelinton (thigh)
Joelinton suffered a thigh injury during Newcastle’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland. He was allowed to play briefly before being removed. Eddie Howe has ruled the Brazilian out for at least six weeks, but surgery is expected to keep the midfielder out until the end of the season. Expected return date: May 2024
8. Sandro Tonali (suspended)
Tonali received a 10-month suspension from football after violating Italian betting regulations. This suspension will keep the midfielder out of action for the remainder of the season, the European Championship next summer, and the first few weeks of the following season. The results of an FA investigation are still waiting. Expected return: 27/08/24
