Sunderland defender Nectarios Triantis has spoken about his summer move to the Stadium of Light and loan to Hibernian.
Sunderland defender Nectarios Triantis believes his loan move to Hibernian was the best decision for his career.
The 20-year-old made only three appearances for Sunderland in the first half of the season, having joined from Central Coast Mariners. Nonetheless, Triantis has appeared nine times for Hibs in all competitions since transferring to Easter Road in January, with head coach Nick Montgomery, who previously worked with the player in Australia, starting him in midfield.
“It was a big move for me coming all the way from Australia to the English Championship,” Triantis told FTBL about his summer transfer to Sunderland. “It was a major step, and it takes time, so there has never been any frustration.
“It’s more about advancing my career. Coming to Hibs has proven to be a wonderful decision. I’ve come here to learn both the aerial and physical aspects of the game. It’s a really high standard in terms of the teams you play against, the speed of the sport, and how enthusiastic the supporters are. It really helps me.”
Triantis has already played for Australia’s under-23s and hopes to be called up to the senior team in the future. When asked about the possibility of representing his country, he answered, “I hope something happens as soon as possible.” “Every player dreams of representing their national team at some point in their careers.
I’m training and playing as hard as I can to attempt to make that leap. It is every player’s goal to travel to Europe and see where it would take them in terms of national team. Ultimately, it comes down to opinions, and I hope to be on the right side of that. I’ve picked up small items since I arrived, and even before that. I believe I’ve developed a lot over the last 12 or 18 months.
“The player I am today is not the one I will be next week or a year from now. It was a significant step for me to travel all the way from Australia to the English Championship. It was a major move, and that takes time – so there was never any frustration.”
