Fabrizio Romano says Newcastle are happy with £12m player and aren’t planning to sell him

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of one Newcastle United player who was linked with a move away in January.

Bayern Munich made multiple proposals for Kieran Trippier during the last transfer window, but none of them are said to have reached Newcastle’s value of the defender.

Now, Romano has spoken to Caught Offside, claiming that Newcastle are pleased with Trippier and hope to retain him around in the future, but we’ll have to wait and see what the summer brings.

Romano says Newcastle hoping to keep star defender

Trippier has been a highly significant figure for Newcastle in the last two years, both on and off the game, and despite being 33 years old, he still has a lot of quality to offer the team.

There were speculations in January that he was past his prime on the way down after making a couple of major mistakes, but he has now returned to his typical top form and is doing well.

It is understood that Bayern Munich’s offers were in the £12 million-£13 million range, which was just insufficient for Newcastle due to his age and duration of contract, and they wanted to maintain his expertise in the team.

He might still leave in the summer, especially if they fail to qualify for any European event this season, but Romano says Newcastle is pleased with his achievements and hopes he stays with the club.

Regarding Trippier, Romano stated: “At the moment, Newcastle are still delighted for Trippier to stay and be a part of their project, which is why they turned down the opportunity to sell him to Bayern Munich in the January window. But it is still March, so let us wait before making any definite plans for the summer.”

 

Newcastle have an ideal Trippier replacement

It’s definitely not on their radar right now as they try to keep all of their finest players this summer, but losing Trippier in the coming months wouldn’t be the worst thing for Newcastle.

Losing someone like Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak would be devastating because they are virtually irreplaceable, but Newcastle already has Tino Livramento ready to step up at right-back.

In the majority of the games in which the 21-year-old has appeared, he has stood out as one of Newcastle’s top players; even in the most recent humiliating defeat to Chelsea, he was still a bright spot in the team.

Newcastle can take solace in the idea that if they lose someone as talented as Trippier this summer, they won’t have to spend money to find a fast replacement.
