Jenson Seelt has resorted to Instagram to update supporters on his recent injury ahead of Sunderland’s match against QPR.
Sunderland already had injury concerns in defense, with Dan Ballard joining Niall Huggins, Dennis Cirkin, and Aji Alese on the sidelines last weekend, and Luke O’Nien is poised to serve the second game of his two-game suspension.
Just when fans thought things couldn’t get much worse, it was revealed this week that Sunderland were now facing a major selection dilemma, with Jenson Seelt the latest casualty.
It was unknown what the Dutchman’s condition was or how long he would be absent, but he has now turned to Instagram to clarify.
Seelt wrote: “I’m devastated to announce that I sustained a knee injury during the game versus Southampton. This has taken me by surprise, and I will be gone for an extended amount of time.
“For the time being, I need to focus on my recuperation and do everything in my power to return better and stronger than before. All obstacles in life contain lessons and opportunities to change them into positive outcomes.”
Seelt stated that he would be out of action for a ‘long period’, while journalist Graham Falk said that the club believes it is an ACL injury.
According to studies, players can be out for six to nine months due to these types of injuries, depending on the severity of the injury after undergoing knee scans.
What does this mean for Sunderland?
Seelt’s absence is an immediate problem, since we will have no fit centre-backs available for this weekend’s game against QPR. While we don’t know the extent of Ballard’s injury, we could be left with only Luke O’Nien for forthcoming games.
With all of our centre-backs now out, it’s puzzling that we chose to play the second half of the season with only three alternatives in the middle of defence.
Nectarios Triantis was far from prepared to take that step forward, but leaving us with only one backup alternative now seems insane. Though, I think we had some fairly awful luck when Aji Alese was sidelined for the second time.
Seelt could be in the treatment room for the rest of the year, which is a major concern for the rest of the season, as it will most likely hinder our transfer business over the summer.
With Ballard certain to draw Premier League interest, we may be compelled to sign a number of new defenders.
