Positive injury news for Newcastle United ahead of Manchester City FA Cup clash

Ederson is expected to miss this weekend’s FA Cup match between Manchester City and Newcastle United.
Manchester City are poised to be without first-choice goalkeeper Ederson when they face Newcastle United this weekend.

Eddie Howe’s team travels to the Etihad Stadium with the goal of breaking a 69-year trophy drought. The Magpies have already eliminated City from one competition, the Carabao Cup, earlier this season.

However, a trip to the champions presents a more daunting challenge, given Newcastle’s dismal record at Eastlands. Since City moved to the Etihad Stadium in 2003, the Magpies have only won one game there, a league Cup victory nine years ago.
Newcastle are up against the odds as Pep Guardiola’s side looks to complete another historic treble. Man City hopes to become the first team in football history to complete back-to-back trebles as they shift their emphasis away from a historic title chase.

While Newcastle fell to Chelsea, City prepared for the cup by drawing with rivals Liverpool. The game had little consequence in terms of Newcastle’s league campaign, but Ederson’s injury gave them a lift for this weekend’s clash.

The Brazilian took down Darwin Nunez inside the area, prompting Michael Oliver to signal to the spot, and the Reds converted the penalty. But Ederson developed a muscle strain during the challenge and will be out for up to four weeks.
This means City must rely on reserve goalkeeper Stefan Ortega against Newcastle on Saturday. Ironically, the Germans played the majority of their 3-2 victory at St James’ Park in January, after Ederson sustained another injury.

Newcastle will welcome an injury blow for the opposition, whose predicament exacerbated following the Chelsea defeat. Harvey Barnes was left out of the matchday squad, while Anthony Gordon and Dan Burn were forced to withdraw.
