Newcastle United man unlikely to sign new contract and will leave club

Loris Karius’ signing by Newcastle United in the summer of 2022 seems particularly unexpected given his previous performances and major mistakes while at Liverpool.

According to Football Insider sources, Newcastle’s backup goalkeeper Loris Karius is unlikely to sign a new contract. His current contract is slated to expire in June.

Karius joined the club on a free transfer in 2022 and received a contract extension in 2023. However, Newcastle United will allow him to leave at the end of the season.

This is unsurprising given his lack of Premier League goalkeeping ability.

Karius garnered infamy in English football for two major mistakes that contributed to Liverpool’s downfall in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Karius has only played two games for Newcastle throughout his time at St James’ Park. His debut for the club came in last year’s League Cup final against Manchester United, which the Red Devils won 2-0 at Wembley.

Karius suffered defeat in his second appearance, when Newcastle lost 4-1 away to Arsenal last month.

Nick Pope, the Magpies’ first choice shot-stopper, has been sidelined with an injury since dislocating his shoulder in December. In his absence, Martin Dubravka has stepped in as goalkeeper, propelling Karius from third-choice to Eddie Howe’s backup.
