Sunderland next manager favourite admits Newcastle boss Eddie Howe ‘inspires’ him

Eddie Howe, who has led Newcastle United to Champions League qualification and the Carabao Cup final, has been a source of inspiration for Sunderland manager Will Still throughout his career.

Sunderland have been without a permanent manager since Michael Beale was ousted last month following only 12 games in charge. Still is one contender who has been tipped to replace him at the Stadium of Light.

The 31-year-old Stade Reims coach made headlines in the United Kingdom last year after managing a successful season in Ligue 1. His club sits ninth in the French top flight ahead of their trip to PSG on Sunday.

While most supporters would welcome his appointment, they may be less interested in learning about his sources of inspiration. In an interview with AS, Still stated, “I was inspired by everyone.”

“No coach is better than another. I believe there are various ideas from around the world of football that we can benefit from. [Carlo] Ancelotti, too, has done some ridiculous things. But we also have Eddie Howe in Newcastle, who does an excellent job.

“You have to try to capture as much information as possible to be able to apply it and not stick to just one style.” So far, Howe’s time at St James’ Park has gone well.

Last season, the Englishman guided the Magpies to Champions League qualification and the Carabao Cup final. Newcastle has struggled this season due to numerous injuries.

While next year’s Champions League appears out of reach, Newcastle remains in contention for the FA Cup, where they will face Manchester City in the quarterfinals next weekend. Meanwhile, Sunderland are 12th in the Championship after losing 4-2 to Southampton on Saturday.
