Can the Tar Heels sweep the ACC championships?
Last night, the 2024 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament bracket was revealed. This news came after the season’s final conference basketball games, with the most notable game yet to be determined between UNC and Duke. The Tar Heels defeated the Blue Devils to win the top seed and become the only regular season champions.
Here’s how the ACC Tournament bracket looks:
Let’s start with what we’re all here to speak about: the Tar Heels will begin their ACC Tournament leg on Thursday, taking on the winner of the Virginia Tech-Florida State game. The other teams in their bracket are Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, and Pitt. Georgia Tech is the lone team that the Heels have lost to during the regular season.
On the other side of the bracket, #2 Duke will play either NC State, Louisville, or Syracuse on Thursday. If they make it to the semifinals, they might face Boston College, Miami, Clemson, or Virginia. ESPN will broadcast the championship game on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
The ACC Tournament should be quite interesting for the Tar Heels, as Georgia Tech was the only club they did not beat during the regular season. The only other games the Heels lost throughout the conference schedule were back-to-back games against Clemson and Syracuse, meaning UNC has a good shot of winning their first ACC Tournament championship since 2016.
It is worth mentioning that if both UNC and Duke advance to the title game, the Tar Heels have historically fared poorly in such situations. Last night confirmed that the Heels are a terrible matchup for the Blue Devils, but the final ten minutes also shown that having an advantage does not always ensure triumph.
Who knows if any team will reach that far, but if they do, you have been warned.
