Newcastle supremo Yasir Al-Rumayyan spotted meeting Jose Mourinho as encounter goes viral

Newcastle United manager Yasir Al-Rumayyan loved his weekend at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, where the stars were out in force.
Newcastle United chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan met Jose Mourinho by happenstance during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The pair were introduced, with the Newcastle manager giving a quick “hi” to the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager before the two parted ways after a brief meeting. Mourinho is no longer employed after being fired by AS Roma, whilst current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was recently regarded as “incredible” by co-owner Amanda Staveley, with the board pleased with the 46-year-old.

Mourinho’s presence in Saudi Arabia inevitably fueled speculation about his next managerial post. The Portuguese coach, who was given his big shot in the game by Sir Bobby Robson, was asked by beIN Sports about his next move and replied over the weekend: “I don’t want to rest; I have to wait for the perfect one, which motivates me. I’d like to work tomorrow if feasible, but I don’t want to make the wrong decision. Roma was fantastic; we had two European finals in two years. That’s difficult in a club that’s never done it. I need to wait for the proper opportunity.”

Richard Keys and Andy Gray examined Mourinho’s presence in Saudi Arabia and speculated about his next move. Keys stated: “He won’t go to Manchester United, but don’t rule out Chelsea. The other one, I believe, is Newcastle. You want to win a trophy? He’s a lock after 20. He is a surety and would unquestionably push Newcastle to the next level.”

Howe’s reputation remains strong on Tyneside and with the Newcastle board, having turned a near-lost cause into Premier League survival in 2021/22 and a relegation struggle into 11th position. Then, last season, he led Newcastle to the Carabao Cup final, their first major competition since 1999, and finished fourth.

This season, despite injuries and internal political troubles with Dan Ashworth’s departure, United are still in the chase for Europe and the FA Cup, with a huge test away to Manchester City looming.
In the Premier League era, only Kevin Keegan has a higher victory ratio at Newcastle than Howe.
