‘He was unbelievable’: Alan Shearer names Newcastle’s greatest ever player

Alan Shearer has revealed who he believes is Newcastle United’s greatest player.

Given Newcastle’s lack of success in recent decades, there haven’t been many options to pick from, so you may have to look back to uncover some of the best answers.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer refused to select himself and couldn’t recall back as far as Jackie Milburn, so he proposed Peter Beardsley as the greatest ever player.

Shearer makes tough Newcastle choice

For younger fans, it may be a simpler option because good players were generally scarce and rarely stayed long before being snatched up by bigger teams.

Yohan Cabaye would undoubtedly be a modern-day choice, while Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak may stake a claim on this current team given their previous success.

However, to choose the greatest Newcastle player of all time, you must go back in time to when Newcastle had some fantastic local players such as Beardsley, Paul Gascoigne, Chris Waddle, and, of course, Shearer.

Of course, it’s impossible to choose someone you’ve never seen before, which is why Shearer was almost compelled to go with someone from his youth, but Beardsley would have been a good choice nonetheless.

On the podcast, Shearer stated: “I would never say myself so Peter Beardsley, I believe. He was outstanding; he was an excellent player. I didn’t see Jackie Milburn, but Peter Beardsley was undoubtedly around throughout my time.”

Newcastle now want to create their own history

It feels like Newcastle has spent far too long looking back and reminiscing the so-called glory days of the mid to late 1990s, when they didn’t win anything but had a team to be enthusiastic about.

This current team is obviously giving them a run for their money, and they have the resources and long-term intentions to eventually overcome the entertainers, at least in terms of trophies.

Newcastle’s new owners hope to build a historic squad that supporters will remember fondly in 20 or 30 years, but this is not a simple task.

Nowadays, you have to compete with the tremendous behemoth that is Manchester City, and it’s tough to see anyone passing them in the modern era, so Eddie Howe certainly has his work cut out for him.
