Yankuba Minteh, Newcastle United’s loan winger, scored again this weekend.
Yankuba Minteh of Newcastle United scored his third goal in three games as Feyenoord drew 2-2 away to PSV Eindhoven on Sunday afternoon.
The 19-year-old equalised after Malik Tillman had opened the scoring. On the hour mark, the visitors took the lead through Santiago Gimenez, but PSV’s Gus Til added a point, maintaining their 10-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie.
Minteh scored his sixth goal of the season, following a brace in a 2-0 win over Almere City. He also scored his first Champions League goal against Celtic in December.
Last summer, the winger joined Newcastle from Danish club Odense for about £7 million before immediately moving to the Netherlands on loan. He has played 25 games this season and represented Gambia at the African Cup of Nations in January.
Magpies manager Eddie Howe discussed the possibility of recalling him at the start of the year, but there was no automatic call-back provision.
It’s likely that Howe will evaluate Minteh during the preseason before choosing whether to keep him in his first-team plans or arrange another loan move.
“I think his loan spell has been productive,” Howe stated previously. “He has scored goals and been a member of a winning squad. He’s obviously talented, but the Premier League is unlike any other league in Europe.
“That does not preclude players from entering or leaving the Premier League. He’s someone we admire, and he definitely has the athletic characteristics we require.”
In the meanwhile, Minteh hopes to end his Feyenoord career on a good note.
“I didn’t always have an easy time at Feyenoord,” Minteh admitted. “I was hurt, and then the African Cup came up, so I was unable to play as much as I could have. It’s not easy to be a Feyenoord winger.
“You must score goals, provide assists, and perform defensive duties. That is a lot, but not a problem for me. That’s how I grew up as a football player: first complete your job, then attack.”
“I’m not finished yet at Feyenoord. I want to showcase more of what I have to offer. We are no longer active in Europe, but there are still many exciting matches to come.”
