Several players were linked with a move away from Newcastle United during the January transfer window.
With the club unable to add anyone during that time due to FFP restrictions, the focus was primarily on potential Newcastle exits.
Kieran Trippier reportedly wanted to join Bayern Munich, while Saudi Arabia expressed interest in Miguel Almiron. Callum Wilson, meanwhile, was tipped as a surprise target for both AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.
Clearly, none of those left, but that does not rule out the rumors. Wilson’s departure was projected this summer, and further details have emerged.
Newcastle transfer news: Callum Wilson latest
According to writer Joel Bland on X (previously Twitter), tensions have increased over Wilson’s predicament on Tyneside, with the striker interested in joining Atletico in January.
Saudi teams are also apparently interested in the 32-year-old, who would have to take a wage reduction and accept third-choice status if he stayed at Newcastle.
Callum Wilson transfer news: Newcastle should sell striker
Wilson has been a terrific addition to Newcastle. A £20 million transfer fee has resulted in 46 goals and 11 assists, many of which came during a difficult period for the club as they battled relegation under Steve Bruce.
Eddie Howe praised him as “massive,” and his contributions to the cause (when healthy) are undeniable.
However, the situation has changed since then. Fellow star striker Alexander Isak is regarded as one of the squad’s most valuable assets, and they are apparently looking to acquire a new forward this summer.
Wilson’s current pectoral injury is the latest in a lengthy list of ailments that have kept him out since his arrival from Bournemouth, and the sheer quantity of absences cannot be overlooked.
If a tempting offer arises, it would be prudent to accept.
