The Saints are already considering summer reinforcements.
Southampton’s play has taken a sad turn in recent weeks, culminating in a 3-0 FA Cup defeat against a weaker Liverpool side. Nonetheless, with Championship promotion in mind, the Saints are apparently looking for summer reinforcements.
Southampton transfer news
Southampton currently sit five points behind Leeds United and Ipswich Town in the race for automatic promotion. This follows back-to-back Championship defeats against Hull City and Millwall, as well as a loss in the FA Cup against Liverpool. Russell Martin will be quite upset if his team’s current slump results in promotion failure this season, following such an outstanding run earlier in the season.
However, whether they fail to achieve promotion or make it to the Premier League this season, it appears like the Saints are in the running to recruit Festy Ebosele. According to Udinese Blog, Southampton, Everton, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford, and Leeds United are all interested in signing Ebosele.
Given the Premier League teams interested in the Udinese winger, Southampton would undoubtedly gain from promotion this season, especially over fellow interested party and promotion contenders Leeds. As the summer transfer window approaches, it appears that Ebosele will have to make a key decision.
Ebosele formerly played for Derby County before leaving for Serie A in the summer of 2022, and he now has the opportunity to return to English football this summer.
“Quick” Ebosele can replace David Brooks
As impressive as David Brooks has been on loan from Bournemouth, scoring three goals in six Championship games, Southampton will be without him at the start of the summer when he returns to the Cherries. As a result, Ebosele becomes a necessary replacement.
The 21-year-old Irish wing-back, who can play more forward, already has Championship experience, having played 38 games for Derby during his time at Pride Park.
During that time, former manager Wayne Rooney praised Ebosele, telling The Irish Sun, “He has so much. He still has a lot to learn and improve, but you can see his progress since the beginning of the season. Not only is he raw and quick, and he can beat a player, but his fitness has also significantly improved. It reflects well on his training.”
Southampton will want to beat Everton and Leeds United to Ebosele’s signature this summer, whether or not he is promoted.
