Danny Murphy believes Bruno Guimaraes’ athleticism is preventing the Newcastle United player from becoming one of the world’s best midfielders.
Bruno Guimaraes has been a constant presence for the Magpies this season, even while Eddie Howe’s team has been devastated by injury.
The Brazilian has missed just one Premier League game this season due to a suspension for too many yellow cards.
Guimaraes has unquestionably been one of the league’s best midfielders throughout his brief stay in England.
However, Danny Murphy believes his athleticism is preventing him from becoming one of the world’s top midfielders.
Murphy on the one problem with Guimaraes’ game
Murphy was questioned on talkSPORT if Newcastle is now concerned about Guimaraes’ agility.
“Yes, absolutely,” the pundit replied. “That’s what will stop him being one of the best because everything else in his game is superb.”Excellent passer, technically skilled. But he isn’t a fantastic athlete.
“I empathize for him since I was the same way. I had to be on top of my game to seem nice, and when I was not physically at my best, I appeared lazy and sloppy.
“To shine, he needs to surround himself with actual athletes. Normally, Joelinton, Willock, and Longstaff surround him with fantastic legs and show off his best qualities.
“To be fair to Bruno, he is always available to play. His agility is only hindered by a lack of support from others.He’s still an important player for them, but that’s what keeps him from being considered one of the world’s best midfielders.”
We’d have to disagree with Murphy here, as we’ve seen numerous top midfielders throughout the years who lack exceptional physical attributes.
Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Xavi, and Andrea Pirlo are all regarded as the top midfielders of the last decade, and none of them have exceptional athleticism in their prime.
While Guimaraes has a long way to go before being regarded for that kind of company, he has been consistently excellent for Newcastle over the last few years.
