Newcastle United want to tie Joelinton down to a new contract with his current deal set to expire in 2025.
Newcastle United have awarded five new contracts for the 2023-24 season, with Joelinton next on the list.
Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson, Fabian Schar, and Lewis Miley have signed new contracts in recent months, and United exercised an option to prolong Emil Krafth’s tenure at St James’ Park until 2025.
And, ahead of tonight’s FA Cup fifth round match away to Blackburn Rovers, Magpies manager Eddie Howe reveals that ensuring Joelinton’s long-term future is a “absolute priority” for him.
Last month, Howe stated that Joelinton could be playing his final game for the club. The Brazilian is racing against the clock to return to action this season after undergoing thigh surgery, and his contract expires next summer.
And Howe is desperate for the 27-year-old to stay on Tyneside after signing from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim for a then-club record £40 million.
“That’s always been in my mind as an absolute priority to try and get him to stay at the club long-term,” added the manager. “I see that as hugely important.”
“When you lose those qualities, I believe you realise their absence. He’s a very unusual midfielder; there aren’t many like him, and we’ve missed out on what he has to offer.”
As of now, every Newcastle United player’s contract ends on the following dates:
1. Elliot Anderson:
Signed a ‘long-term’ contract in September 2022.
2. Anthony Gordon:
Newcastle did not reveal the term of Gordon’s contract when he signed from Everton just over a year ago.
Will spend the 23-24 season on loan at Newcastle before transferring permanently from Chelsea next summer.
