Crystal Palace got off to a great start under Oliver Glasner this weekend against Burnley, winning 3-0 and keeping the referee busy.
On Saturday at Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace’s new era began with a bang, as Oliver Glasner oversaw a 3-0 triumph.
Chris Richards, an American international, started the scoring before Jordan Ayew added a second with a beautiful Matheus Franca assist.
The third goal came from the penalty spot, which Jean-Philippe Mateta converted to give the triumph a scoreline as imposing as it was in action.
But that wasn’t all that happened; a red card for Burnley’s Josh Brownhill was also a significant moment, and that judgment has also been praised.

Dermot Gallagher, a former referee and current expert in breaking down decisions, conceded to Sky Sports on Monday that the decision to send Josh Brownhill off was outstanding.
He stated, “It’s actually a great spot from the referee because he’s in an unexpected position.” Brownhill drags Lerma back, despite Trafford’s expected forward play.
“Is he clear about his goal? Has he have a chance to shoot? I would say sure, and the referee says yes, so it’s a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.
His assessment of the decision is entirely correct, and Stephen Warnock agreed, stating that he is thrilled to see a referee make such a call.
“This referee [Lewis Smith] hasn’t dealt with VAR in a long time. That’s excellent because he’s acting on instinct.
“It’s a referee who is backing his ability, who is making the call and going with it straight away and that’s what we need referees to get back to.”

The red card was not a coincidence, but rather a direct outcome of Glasner’s desperate attempt to impose high press.
After the game, he admitted it while thanking his team for forcing the red card.
This is something we’d like to see more of, with a high press resulting in balls won in dangerous areas, either creating a chance or forcing the defender to foul.
